What Should We Wear?- Styling Guide

One of the most frequently asked questions by my clients is, what should we wear? You've booked your session and now it's time to choose those outfits that are going to make you and your photos look amazing!

My answer is simple, wear what you feel most comfortable and confident in! We all want to look smart and well presented for our photos, but if you aren't the type to wear a dress or shirt then go with your usual style. Wearing what you feel most comfortable in will help achieve natural photos that reflect your true personalities. That being said, there are a few tips I can give you to help you decide on the perfect outfits for your session.

Coordination is Key!

I recommend colour coordination over matching outfits (though matching the little ones can be adorable too!). Picking two or three colours from the same colour pallet works really well, but before you go rushing out to buy new clothes, try laying all the family's favourite outfits on the bed and see if you have a few colours that compliment each other. Another thing you might want to consider is the theme of your home- are you planning on framing your photos for the living room? If so what colours would go well?

If you are planning a generation shoot with the extended family, then it’s important you communicate with them your chosen theme… If one person doesn’t follow suit, then they may stick out and look out of place. Here are some example images on complimenting colour palettes I found on Pinterest (a great tool for outfit inspiration!).

Things to consider

  • Weather & Location- Dress appropriately for your environment. Consider your location, if it's in a woodland or field and it has rained the night before, then boots are probably better than sandals. Instead of packing on big coats, try layering your outfits, use jumpers with jackets and scarfs.

  • A photo shoot can be a dynamic environment, so when thinking about your outfits try not to choose anything too restricting.

  • Accessories are great but don’t let them overwhelm you- some accessories, like hats and umbrellas can even double up as props!

  • Shoes matter! So if trainers are what you feel most comfortable in then they need to be presentable.

  • If it’s windy on the day, then consider tying back your hair or braiding it, you don’t want to keep sweeping hair away from your face.

  • Be prepared for close ups! Remove the chipped nail vanish and put on the "good jewellery"

  • And this one is important-Avoid bold logos and clashing patterns!

I hope this helps you find the perfect wardrobe for your photos. If you have booked in your session with me then I am always on hand to help with your choices and offer some advice on those finishing touches!
